RLO Contractors was founded in 1976 by Robert and Joyce Orndorff. The company began with a single backhoe but it did not take long before they needed to add operators and additional equipment to address growing customer needs.
The company originally installed residential water/sewer connections, septic systems, and house footings. After purchasing the first loader they began pursuing residential excavating contracts. During the 1980s RLO experienced substantial growth which allowed the company to broaden its focus to both residential and commercial site development.
RLO services residential and commercial developers and builders. The company offers a complete excavation package, everything from site clearing, sediment control, and street grading to house excavation. Bob oversees overall operations and estimating. Joyce handles the various business activities of the company. Together, they are supported by two key long-time managers, Jerry Orndorff and Brian Pickett. The company operates from its headquarters located in Dayton, Maryland.
In 2002, RLO Contractors opened its Products Division in Elkridge, Maryland. This Division is responsible for hauling wood products that have been cleared and processed off-site and then manufactures them into mulch. Selling primarily to landscapers and retailers, the product line includes regular and color-enhanced mulch, screened topsoil, playmat, chips, and more. This Division is an integral part of the overall company and is managed by Ryan Orndorff. In February 2015, this Division relocated to Jessup, Maryland.
Bob believes that many things have contributed to the success and growth of the company. This includes ties to the local community, a vibrant and growing market, and having a fleet of equipment and trucks that is state of the art. The fleet is consistently being updated to take advantage of technological advances and meet customer needs.
A superior in-house shop results in less downtime and greater productivity. Most importantly, however, is the strong work ethic and dedication among the employees – the company's greatest asset.
